The building at 1223 was designed by architect Frank Furness; the building at 1221 is believed to have been designed by architect Lindley Johnson. From about 1910 through the 1970s, the buildings housed the Princeton Club of Philadelphia. Alterations were made by the club in 1915 and 1919 to join the buildings together. The Princeton Club of Philadelphia was founded in 1868, and was housed in five other buildings before moving to Locust Street.
